This seminar is a co-operation event with the South African College of Music: Religions are of fundamental importance in shaping the societies we live in, both in Germany and in South Africa. The religious landscape in South Africa differs a lot from that in Germany. In South Africa the three Abrahamitic religions were established during colonisation in the 17th century and today form an integral and equitable part of the South African religious landscape. In Germany, however, the different religions are often perceived as associated with particular groupings within the German population. Today in South Africa, while public life is entire secular, religion plays an important role in the lives of many students. In Germany on the other hand, Christianity is ever-present in public life, while many students are either not religious or not actively practicing their religion. In cooperation with students and teachers from the South African College of Music, we want to analyse the significance of religious music in Germany and South Africa. Following several introductory online sessions, participants from Cape Town and Detmold will work together to develop concrete case studies, looking at music in Christian, Judaic and Islamic practices, and present them at a student conference at the end of the joint week of study at the Musicology Department Detmold/Paderborn. The seminar offers participants the opportunity to work very closely with students from the University of Cape Town. |
